Have you ever attempted to define your personal style?
If an armed maniac poked a weapon in my back and ordered me to explain my style, I would (after checking out her shoes) stutter nervously before yelling out “CLASSIC WITH A BOHEMIAN TWIST!” Then she would look me up and down, all skeptical like, and say “Really?!” with her nose scrunched up in utter confusion.
I don’t know about you, but my fashion Pinterest board (ie my style in my head) and my real life wardrobe tell two totally different stories. While Pinterest tells the tale of classic lines, layers and funky accessories, meeting me in person would whisper something totally different in your ear. In fact, I may or may not be wearing a v-neck t-shirt with evidence of someone’s meal across one boob (I would blame the kids, but let’s get real. It could just as easily be mine) and a pair of denim cutoffs with a serious hole threatening to burst in the crotch. This also may or may not pretty much be my summer wardrobe.
How is it possible to have such a major disconnect between what you like and what you actually look like you like?
A lot of it is straight laziness. Yeah, there are issues like body image and budget. But I wear v-necks and jeans because it’s easy. So easy. I can reach into my drawer blindfolded (or while distracted by warring children) and pull out something that goes together and can be thrown on within seconds without giving it another thought. But maybe I should give it another thought. Maybe I would feel better if I gave it another thought.

Combing through my pins, what I really seem to like is classic with quirk. Sometimes the quirk is a bohemian print. Sometimes it’s a pop of color. Sometimes it’s an armful of bracelets or a headscarf. And sometimes it’s an unexpected combination of prints or textures. If I hadn’t spent time looking at what I’ve been pinning, I don’t think I would have been able to tell you that. I would’ve said “Ummm, I like green. And comfort. And cute shoes.”
So what am I going to do with this information? Well, instead of reaching for trends the next time I go shopping, I think I’ll look for classic pieces that fit well. I’ll look for colors and textures that I like and that look good on me and I’ll try to think of unusual ways to combine them. And maybe (maybe) when I get dressed tomorrow I’ll sift through my closet for a combination I’ve never worn before.
Have you ever tried to define your personal style? Do you think it’s something that’s important to recognize or something that doesn’t matter at all?
